I currently work in a posh private school but I spent my first nine years of teaching in the very urban inner city district of Flint, Michigan. I spent a lot of my own money on pencils and crayons to say the least. I learned how to write grants. I wish there was a program like this that I knew about back in the 90's! Awsome work! This year she isn't getting any help with science supplies, and not always lab supplies either. She buys those out of pocket. In order to inspire her students, she presents one with a "Student of the Week" award...out of her own pocket also. The school doesn't have air conditioning, and it's pretty hot in her classroom - upstairs with no windows. She buys them bottled water and Otter pops to help cool it down, and brings in her own swamp coolers and fans to make it cooler. She also coaches soccer there, and spent $60 of her own money to repaint the soccer field since the school ran out. She has been teaching for 32 years. She teaches in rural South Carolina. She has 23 students this year. Over 90% of these receive free or reduced lunch. Parental contributions to this class are limited. She is very dedicated. She still looks for ways to actively involve each of her students. She loves cruising the bookstore in search of great new books that will make her students want to read! She enters every blog conest that offers something she can use in her classroom!! I am Mrs. C. I hope it's ok to nominate myself. Most of my students do not have internet access at home.
