San Diego Wild Animal Park Map Lesson

Exciting news! I have moved blogs. I am in the process of slowly moving all the posts over. Please join me at MomOffTrack.com.

This map lesson teaches map coordinates, cardinal and ordinal directions, reading maps for information and several other math and social studies skills. I originally made the lesson for fourth graders but it can be and adapted for 2nd-6th depending on the child. This is a great way to get kids interested in using a map for real life skills. I usually grab several maps when we are at theme parks and zoos and laminate them ($.15 a foot most places). This way the kids can use a figure (the Candy Land people work great) to move around the map as we make up silly stories about them. To complete this lesson you will need a San Diego Wild Animal Park map. If you aren’t lucky enough to have one lying around the house you can download it here. You will also need a copy of the lesson activity which you can print here: San Diego Wild Animal Park map lesson plan. That is it! Have a great “fieldtrip” :)

If you have fun with this lesson, you can also do the San Diego Zoo Map Activity.
