I know this is not specific to homeschooling but if it helps just one person to get funding for therapies it is worth the post! Anyone who lives in Nevada knows how hard it is to get any kind of service for kids with special needs. Hopefully this is a small start. Anyway-below is the email sent to me:
If you have a child under age 11 with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),
please read this. If you do not, please pass this information on.
After 8 years of grassroots parent lobbying, the 2007 Nevada legislature
passed AB639 (section 40 and 41), which helps families fund autism treatment
for their children diagnosed with autism, aspergers, or any ASD. Since the
incidence is now epidemic at 1 in every 150 children according to the CDC, I
know this email will reach many parents who desperately need this info. The
eligibility for funding has been worked out and there will be an application
clinic on October 18 in Southern Nevada. Depending on your child’s age and
your income, over $1,500 a month for almost 2 years will be made available
to you for evidence based treatments.
Research has shown about half of the children diagnosed with autism who
begin intensive Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) treatment before the age of
three and continue for two or more years, will recover enough to attend
regular school classes and become productive members of society. The United
States Surgeon General even recommends ABA treatment for autism in his 2000
“Report on Mental Health”. But even without recovery, young children can
improve enough to live in the community and not need to be
institutionalized. These outcomes insure state money used for autism
treatment is extremely cost effective. This treatment is usually supervised
in the home setting. Funding for other evidence based programs, speech
therapy, physical therapy, etc, will also be allowed. Limited services for
children aged 11 to 18 will also be provided for children with ASD in a
crisis situation.
Parents need to call to start the application process, and ask for Autism
services. There is going to be a seminar/application clinic on October 18 at
10 am in Southern Nevada.
